Introduction
Welcome to the “Why did Jesus die for our sins” article. I can say right from the start that Jesus came to save His own from the power of sin, Satan and death. ✚Heb. 2:14–15, ✚1 John 3:8, ✚2 Tim. 1:10 He came to expand salvation by bringing it available to all believers, not only to the Jews, as in the old covenant. He destroyed the works of the devil and He came as the atoner of sins, and as the eternal king, and as God. ✚John 20:28 I will now tell more about the topic.
What Did Jesus Come to Bring to the World?
Jesus came to bring love, salvation, deliverance, healing of the sick and casting out of demons. He came as an example and as the supreme apostle, so that believers could follow Him.
Jesus did not do His own will. He did not live as He wanted. He perfectly and sinlessly did the will of God the Father. ✚John 6:38 He knew His mission and His place. He took the form of a servant temporarily. ✚Phil. 2:7. He did what no other human being is able to do. He was able to, because He is the Son of God.
He is however in the same way also human, like any other human being, which makes it wonderful. How is it possible that someone can live a perfect life without a single sin or mistake? No one else is able to do that except Jesus. Jesus heard the voice of the Father and often it is precisely the hearing of the Father’s voice that brings strong faith. He knew that the mission belongs to Him. When He stepped into the ministry, He was certain that He is the Son of God and Christ, the messiah God Himself said it as a physical voice, which everyone present heard. ✚Matthew 3:17.
Why Could Sins Not Be Atoned for in Another Way?
The universe was created through Jesus and into Jesus ✚Col. 1:16. Everything has therefore already been planned before the foundation of the world. God the Father decided right from the beginning to create everything into Jesus. Sin however came into the world through the fall of man into sin, and paradise was not directly created.
It was because Eve fell into sin first and then Adam. ✚Gen. 3:6. If the fall into sin had not happened, then paradise could have come right from the beginning. God however tested man. He looked whether man could be trusted. He could not.
God’s Plan: The Old Covenant
Then there was the old covenant. Only Jews were saved at that time. Also converts. But not even the old covenant was pleasing to God. He did not take to the animal sacrifices and had to drown everyone in the flood except the righteous Noah, and seven others ✚Gen. 6:5–7, ✚Gen. 7:13. The wickedness of people made God angry.
In the old covenant there was the Holy Spirit, but it was only on designated persons. The same Holy Spirit worked, as also today. For example pagans could not receive the Holy Spirit, unlike now. A pagan believer can receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
God’s Plan: The New Covenant
However God still had a plan, how to get a perfect paradise. And that plan was His Son Jesus. Jesus brought the new covenant and the old covenant became obsolete. ✚Heb. 8:13, ✚Luke 22:20. This was the last plan of God and it did not fail, nor will it fail. Everything is now dependent on Christ Jesus and He can be trusted. God trusts Jesus 100% and Jesus does not make mistakes.
We however still live in a time that is a war against Satan. Jesus has already won that war ✚Heb. 2:14, ✚2 Tim. 1:10. On which side do you want to be? On the side of the winner or the loser? If you want to be on the side of the winner, then you must repent, be born again and be saved. Satan has already lost. He cannot defeat God, it is impossible. Satan is a created being. God is God, whom no one has created.

Why Did Jesus Do That Work?
We cannot know what conversations Jesus and God the Father have had, but everything is thoroughly planned. Jesus knew His mission. ✚1 Pet. 1:20. We also do not know whether the Father showed what will happen before Jesus came to the world. Because Jesus wanted that cup to be taken away ✚Luke 22:42. If Jesus had seen everything in advance, then He would not have asked that question. Prophesying is imperfect. ✚1 Cor. 13:9.
Jesus did it above all, because it was the Father’s will. One cannot really think whether Jesus could have refused the mission, because that did not happen. The mission of Jesus is the purpose and fulfillment of God. Only through Jesus is paradise perfect and evil is defeated.
Nothing Is Greater Than to Die for a Friend
This tells of the love of Jesus towards believers. Jesus loves so much that He died on the cross a terrible death for the sake of people. He Himself said that it is the greatest thing one can do and He did it. ✚John 15:13. It tells how immense the love of Jesus is.
I have seen some near death experiences about Jesus, and I cannot know for certain which are true and which are not, but in nearly every one of them the person experiences that immense love that is in Jesus. They have never experienced any comparable love and it is difficult for them to put it into words. Nearly all of them would have wanted to stay in heaven, but Jesus has said that they must return. Heaven is therefore a place, from which one does not want to leave. That much better a place it is, than the world.
Summary
Jesus came to defeat the power of death, Satan and sin. Jesus did above all the will of God the Father. He did not seek His own, but knew exactly His mission. Jesus did it sinlessly and flawlessly. In the old covenant only Jews were saved, but now in the new covenant salvation has been given to the pagans as well. Jesus did what no one else could have ever done. He reigns even at this moment in heaven on the throne at the right hand of God the Father. ✚Mark 16:19.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why did Jesus have to die on the cross? The death of Jesus on the cross was the will and plan of God the Father, which was decided already before the foundation of the world (✚1 Pet. 1:20). Only as a sinless sacrifice of Jesus was the atonement of sins possible. No other human being could have lived a perfect, sinless life and atoned for the sins of mankind.
Why could sins not be atoned for without the death of Jesus? Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness (✚Heb. 9:22). The animal sacrifices of the old covenant were not pleasing to God and were not sufficient for final atonement. Jesus was the only perfect sacrifice, who was able to atone for sins finally.
What is the difference between the old and new covenant? In the old covenant salvation was limited mainly to Jews and converts, and the Holy Spirit was only on designated persons. In the new covenant Jesus expanded salvation to be available to all believers, also to pagans. Now every believer can receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
Did Jesus know in advance that He would die? Jesus knew His mission, but in the Garden of Gethsemane He asked that the cup be taken away (✚Luke 22:42). This suggests that He did not necessarily know everything in detail in advance, for prophesying is imperfect (✚1 Cor. 13:9). He however submitted to the will of the Father.
What did the death of Jesus accomplish? Jesus defeated the power of death, Satan and sin (✚Heb. 2:14, ✚2 Tim. 1:10, ✚1 John 3:8). He brought the new covenant, in which salvation is available to all believers. He destroyed the works of the devil and opened the way to eternal life.
Could Jesus have refused His mission? The Bible does not tell of such a possibility, because that did not happen. Jesus did above all the will of the Father (✚John 6:38), and did not seek His own. The mission of Jesus is the purpose and fulfillment of God.
How can I be saved through Jesus? You must repent, be born again and believe in Jesus Christ. Salvation is a gift of grace from God, which is received by faith (✚Rom. 6:23, ✚John 3:16). Read more about being saved from this article.
